There is raising evidence for focused shockwave therapy to be useful for secondary lymphoedema. It enhances proliferation of new blood vessels; thus we are hopeful it will help generating new lymphatic vessels and pathways and stimulate the lymphatic system for secondary lymphoedema. It also helps to break down fibrotic tissues and scar tissues and thus assists with lymph reabsorption back to the lymphatic system. It enhances tissue oxygenation and thus improves skin condition and reduces skin infection.

Focused shockwave is a very easily applied treatment with an ultrasound gel on affected areas, either the arm or leg. Usually, the session takes about 15 mins or less. There is no pain or heat with focused shocked wave. The only thing you need to prepare is a loud sound when the shockwave is applied to the area but the therapist can offer you a noise cancelling headphone if required.
