Focused shockwave therapy

At Lymph and Floor Physio, we use Medispec EDSWT (ED1000) -a medical device that uses advanced acoustics technology based on electrohydraulic power. It has proven to be effective in cardiology with recent success in reversible ischemic tissues of the heart.

At Lymph and Floor Physio, we offer this option of therapy to patients to improve erectile function (especially related to vascular deficiency), chronic pelvic pain syndrome, and lymphoedema and lipoedema conditions, as there are emerging evidence of benefits of shockwave therapy.

EDSWT uses low intensity extracorporeal shock waves, focusing on blood vessels and encouraging neovascularization. It is a painless, natural and non-invasive treatment.

SHOCKWAVE AND ERECTILE DYSFUNCTION
    • Applying the shockwave to the penis shaft and crus, it promotes stem cells and growth factors to migrate to the treatment areas, opens up new blood vessels and the existing blood vessels may open up more, and may help nerves to regrow.
    • Triggering the release of nitric oxide (principal neurotransmitter mediating erections), which enables the muscles in the penis to relax.
    • Patients who had good responses to oral PDE5 inhibitor drugs, like Viagra, are usually good candidates to focused shockwave therapy as their erectile dysfunction is usually vascular driven. The results from shockwave treatment are durable, with many men experiencing benefits for up to 2 years post treatment. So if they would like to reduce their Viagra, the could try this shockwave therapy for 6 weeks as they have a good chance in weaning off or reducing the dose of Viagra. Others who are unresponsive to the drugs and were trying vacuum pumps, injections and perhaps implants, 70% of them may become responsive to the PDES5 inhibitors after a trial of the EDSWT therapy.

Please contact your urologist, medical health practitioner, continence nurse, sexual therapist, pelvic floor physiotherapist or myself to ensure you are informed of your options and feel supported when making a decision to improve your quality of life.

SHOCKWAVE AND CHRONIC PELVIC PAIN SYNDROME

Chronic Pelvic Pain Syndrome is a chronic persistent pain within the pelvis which may be associated with the bladder, bowels, uterus, genitals connective tissues or nothing organic, in the absence of any pathology. Treating chronic pelvic pain usually involves multidisciplinary input and pelvic floor physiotherapy is one of them. In addition to existing conservative strategies such as diaphragmatic breathing, pelvic floor relaxation training, manual therapy, stretches, TENS machine, massage therapy, low intensity shock wave therapy could be an additional tool that has raising evidence to improve pain in this CCPS population. Unlike radial shockwave therapy that most clinics have, low intensity focused shockwave can penetrate much deeper and produce biological effects on the treatment area.

SHOCKWAVE AND LYMPHOEDEMA and LIPOEDEMA
  • Stimulates the formation of blood vessels (angiogenesis), improving blood flow, and supporting tissue health in the affecting area.
  • Stimulates the lymphatic system, reducing the fluid retention, which alleviates the swelling.
  • It breaks the fibrosis formation and thus promote the healthier tissue regeneration.
  • It decreases inflammation and promotes endorphin release.
  • Able to improve the degree of cellulite after 6 weeks of once or twice weekly treatment.
